Troubleshooting common export issues

PDF Export Not Working

Export Limits

There's no PDF export limit — every signed-in user gets unlimited PDF exports at no token cost. If you see a limit-reached message, it's a bug — please report it via the feedback button.

Large Scribes

Very large scribes may take longer to generate PDFs. The export process runs server-side, so:

  • Wait for the download to begin (it may take 30-60 seconds for long scribes)
  • Don't close the tab while the export is processing
  • If the PDF doesn't download after 2 minutes, try again

Formatting Issues in PDF

If your PDF doesn't look right:

  • Check your customization settings — font size, margins, and page size all affect layout
  • Try a different font family — some fonts handle special characters better than others
  • Ensure Table of Contents is toggled as desired

Word/EPUB Export Issues

Word and EPUB exports are available to every signed-in user. If you don't see these options, make sure you're logged in.

EPUB Not Opening on My Device

  • EPUB files work with most e-readers (Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books)
  • Some older Kindle models require MOBI format — try using Calibre to convert
  • Make sure your e-reader app is up to date

"Preview & Customise" Is Greyed Out

This shouldn't happen — Preview & Customise is available to every signed-in user, no upgrade needed. If the button appears disabled, try refreshing the page; if it persists, report it via the feedback button.

Export Shows Wrong Author Name

The author name in exports comes from your display name in your Settings:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Update your display name
  3. Export again — the new name will appear

For scribes you didn't create, the original author's name is shown (read-only).

Missing Content in Export

If your exported file is missing sections:

  • Check if the scribe generation completed fully
  • Look for any sections marked as "failed" or "missing"
  • Use "Complete Scribe" to generate any missing sections before exporting
